Use Cases

How people are using the Nucleus — from ATAK operations and portable OpenTAKServer deployments to private communications and internet gateway distribution.

ATAK Operations

Full-speed ATAK over mesh — no infrastructure, no plugins.

Connect ATAK devices to the Nucleus WiFi mesh and everything works at full speed — SA, chat, pictures, routes, data packages, and voice. ATAK auto-discovers other devices on the mesh via standard multicast. No TAKserver required for basic SA sharing, no plugins to install, no configuration on the phone beyond connecting to the WiFi access point.

The WiFi mesh runs at ~30 Mbps close range and 1–5 Mbps at distance, which means ATAK operates the way it was designed to — not throttled through a LoRa bottleneck. File transfers, picture sharing, and data packages move at real speed.

Add an OpenTAKServer node and the team gets centralized SA, data packages, mission planning, and video distribution — all running on a portable, battery-powered Nucleus in the field.

  • ATAK works natively over the WiFi mesh — SA, chat, pictures, voice at full speed
  • Auto-discovery via multicast — no TAKserver needed for basic SA
  • ATAK voice plugin routes voice across the mesh network
  • Video streaming via OpenTAK ICU through OpenTAKServer's built-in MediaMTX to all ATAK clients
  • Optional OpenTAKServer runs directly on a Nucleus node
  • Battery powered, fully portable, no external infrastructure

Extended Range SA via LoRa CoT Bridge

Your position shows up on ATAK screens miles away — automatically.

The Nucleus includes a built-in CoT bridge that transparently forwards ATAK SA and chat messages over the onboard Meshtastic LoRa radio. When your ATAK device sends a position update on the local network, the Nucleus intercepts it and pushes it out as CoT packets over LoRa. Remote Nucleus nodes receive it and inject it back into their local network as native multicast — your position shows up on distant ATAK screens automatically.

Zero configuration on the phone. No ATAK plugin needed. The bridge handles the compression, rate limiting, and loop prevention transparently. Tested to 8+ miles with line of sight on the LoRa link.

This gives you two layers of coverage: high-speed WiFi mesh for close/medium range (SA, voice, video, files), and long-range LoRa for position and chat extending well beyond WiFi range.

  • Transparent SA + chat bridging over Meshtastic LoRa — no phone plugin needed
  • Sends CoT packets directly over LoRa — no phone plugin needed
  • Rate-limited (30s per UID) and loop-protected for clean operation
  • LoRa tested to 8+ miles with line of sight
  • Toggle between CoT Bridge mode and BLE mode (Meshtastic phone app) via web UI
  • Two layers: high-speed WiFi mesh + long-range LoRa SA

Large Events & Outdoor Activities

Stay in touch when cell signal isn't an option.

At festivals, races, group hikes, or any large outdoor gathering, cell towers get overloaded or simply don't exist. The Nucleus Meshtastic radio gives your group encrypted text and GPS sharing over miles of range — no cell signal required.

For groups that need more than text, the WiFi mesh adds high-speed data for voice calls, photo sharing, and real-time coordination between teams spread across a large area.

  • Meshtastic text and GPS with 8+ mile range (line of sight)
  • WiFi mesh for voice, pictures, and fast data when closer together
  • Works completely independent of cell networks
  • Each node extends coverage for the entire group

Private Communications

Full comms without exposing personal devices or relying on carrier networks.

In situations where privacy matters — journalism, sensitive coordination, or operating without carrier infrastructure — the Nucleus provides encrypted video, voice, text, and picture sharing over its own network. No personal cell phones on the network, no carrier logs, no central servers.

Jami provides video and voice calls via the onboard OpenDHT server. Reticulum handles decentralized encrypted messaging. Everything stays on the mesh unless you explicitly bridge it to the internet.

  • WPA3 encrypted WiFi mesh — no carrier involvement
  • Video, voice, and text via Jami with no central server
  • Reticulum for decentralized encrypted messaging
  • No personal phone numbers or identities exposed
  • Network is self-contained — nothing leaves the mesh unless you want it to

Internet Gateway & Starlink Distribution

Push internet across the mesh from a single connection.

Plug any Nucleus node into an internet source — Starlink, Ethernet, cellular — and the entire mesh network gets internet access. Every node and every device connected to those nodes can reach the internet with no additional routers or configuration.

Use Tailscale VPN for secure tunnel back to your infrastructure, or Reticulum transport for decentralized secure routing. Ideal for remote locations, field operations, or disaster response where a single internet connection needs to serve a spread-out team.

  • One internet source serves the entire mesh network
  • Plug Ethernet from Starlink, cellular modem, or any internet source into any node
  • Internet automatically shared to all connected nodes and devices
  • Combine with Tailscale/Reticulum for secure internet-bridged comms
